Six Main Towns
Which town is best? All have unique landmarks and separate histories. The down-island towns, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven and Edgartown, are close to beaches, lodging, shopping and dining. The up-island towns, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah, are located in remote parts of the island. Insider Tip: If you want a cocktail with meals, only restaurants in the "wet towns" serve alcoholic beverages.

Storybook Charm

Oak Bluffs (wet town)
It's a lively, active fun place to be. The town owes its fame to the Methodists who pitched tents in the campgrounds for their religious revivals. Over time, the tents changed to elaborate resort cottages that dominate the landscape with whimsical Victorian architecture and a heady, laid-back attitude.

Edgartown (wet town)
This town is living proof of a glorious bygone era. It is an elegant seaport village that has many architectural reminders of its prominent place in America's colonial and whaling history. In season, Edgartown's Great Harbor is a thriving port for yachts and sailing regattas.

Vineyard Haven (wet town)
As it was a century ago, Vineyard Haven (Tisbury) is a busy port. 365 days a year, ships of all sizes, including ferries from the Woods Hole, New Bedford and Rhode Island, sail in and out of its bustling harbor. One special part of life here is the town’s love of the arts. Now wine and beer may be ordered with dinner.

Up-Island (dry towns, except Aquinnah)
West Tisbury, Chilmark (Menemsha is part of Chilmark) and Aquinnah are the up island towns made up of commercial fishing, rural farming and native American Wampanoag communities. The unhurried way of life here among the rolling hills, rugged coastline and cool green pastures is especially appealing if you want to rest, relax and renew in the peaceful countryside.
